Administrative Office Skills This program provides an excellent opportunity for those who wish to gain the skills necessary to seek employment in an office environment. The class will include: communication skills, telephone techniques, office equipment, proofreading skills, and an accounting simulation. Advanced Basic First Aid A more comprehensive First Aid course, this program will cover a broad range of topics including scene safety, patient assessment, basic life support and universal precautions. More in-depth course information may be obtained through the Adult Education Division. Advanced Blueprint Reading For people with practical experience working with blueprints who wish to formalize and advance their knowledge of the industry language and symbols used today on industrial mechanical blueprints. American Heart Association Adult CPR This program is available to anyone who wishes to become certified in CPR training techniques. This class will provide information about heart disease, risk factors, signals and actions for survival, prudent heart living, and heart and lung function. This course will instruct learners in one-rescuer CPR, management of foreign-body airway obstruction, and the use of barrier devices for ventilation (if required). B....... Basic Blueprint Reading The No Sweat Blueprint Reading Training Program will give participants the training needed to read basic engineering drawings drawn to the ANSIY 14 Standard. (Material fee $30).Basic Carpentry Techniques Designed for the person with little or no knowledge of carpentry, this course will introduce the basic techniques of carpentry including measuring, layout, proper tool and material selection, and safety. Basic framing techniques and other introductory processes in construction will also be covered. Basic Commercial Building Maintenance Learn basic troubleshooting and preventative maintenance in this course. Topics include safe working conditions, selection and use of proper tools, cleaning, electrical, plumbing, and minor building repairs. Basic First Aid This course is useful for home and work and will cover the legal aspects of first aid, communicable diseases, ABC's of assessment, bleeding control, fracture management, eye injuries, care of burns, and medical emergencies. Each student will receive a course packet of instructional material to keep for future reference. Basic Home Repair Having to pay someone to come into your home to fix or replace things can often be an expensive proposition, and often repairs may be made that do not require an expert. This course shows you how to troubleshoot problems and fix many of them using common tools and techniques. Both women and men are encouraged to take this course to learn home repair basics that will give them independence and save hard earned money. Basic Introduction to Computers Learn what computers can do for you. This class is designed for those who have no prior computer experience. It features hands-on and individual attention. Basic Shop Math Refresh forgotten math skills and develop new skills in the mathematical concepts needed to advance in the modern manufacturing environment. Subject matter will include a review of whole number operations and fractions and development of skills in basic algebra, geometry, and the use of formulas. Beginning Computer/Keyboarding If you still think of a mouse as a cheese-eating rodent and an "A drive" as something faster than "A walk," this class is for you. We will refresh your keyboarding skills as you learn to maneuver around the computer and explore the Internet. No previous keyboarding or computer experience is necessary. Beginning Stained Glass Now is the time to get started in the fastest growing craft in the nation. Students can learn the basic technique of the copper-foil method for making beautiful stained glass windows and lamps. Students will complete a 9" x 12" panel, and if time allows, will construct a candle shelter. Bring a fine tipped marker and scissors to the first class. Bloodborne Pathogen This course is a must for those whose occupations might expose them to blood or bodily fluids, including teachers, child care providers, and health care workers. Even manufacturing workers may be exposed to a co-worker's blood through a work-related injury. This course will introduce you to the types of diseases that may be transmitted through exposure to blood and to universal precautions to prevent this transmission. This course meets OSHA standards. Business Writing Learn how to set up and organize business letters, memos, reports, and other types of business correspondence. Improve your proofreading skills, grammatical accuracy and writing style. C........ Cake Decorating A course for beginners with emphasis on design of cakes, icing, borders, flowers, and piping. Learn helpful hints that make cake decoration fast and fun. All supplies to be furnished by student. A list will be available first night of class.Cake Decorating, Special Techniques This course is designed for the more advanced cake decorating student. Creative techniques to make their cakes their own and use of special trims will be included. Prior experience is necessary. Carpentry for Contractors Upgrade your employees' or your own carpentry skills through this course. Subject areas include: Framing, roofing, interior and exterior finish, and special construction techniques. Each subject lasts for two weeks. Participants may sign up for the entire eight-week course or take any of the individual subject areas listed. Carpentry Techniques This course is geared toward the second-year carpentry apprentice or the construction worker who wishes to enhance basic skills. Safety will be emphasized, including use of power tools, ladder and scaffold safety, and use of other safety equipment. Other basic techniques will be taught including shortcuts and efficiency tips. Computer Maintenance Learn how to maintain, upgrade, and repair your home computer. In this class, you will learn how to install software and add upgrades including cards and modems. Normal software maintenance, simple repairs, and diagnostics are also covered. Computer Peripherals In this course you will learn how to use the latest computer add-ons such as digital cameras and scanners, learn to scan in, download from a camera, e-mail photos, and save e-mail photos. Also learn the basics of Jpeg, TIF, and BMP. Computer Usage- Level 1 Learn what computers can do for you. This class is for those with no prior computer experience. Computer Usage- Level 2 You will learn the various functions of a computer and what they can do for you. Topics include: intro to word processing and spreadsheet and data base usage. Microsoft Office 2002 will be the software used. Conversational Spanish - Basic A basic introduction into the conversational aspect of Spanish is featured in this class. Special emphasis will be placed on listening and speaking skills, vocabulary, basic grammar, and idioms concerning time, greetings, weather, and numbers. (Textbook $14) Conversational Spanish - Intermediate This class is a continuation of the Basic Spanish Class. It is designed to help strengthen conversational and grammar skills and increase Spanish vocabulary. Understanding of the Spanish culture will also be addressed. Customer Service Good customer service is the lifeblood of any organization, and a successful company must stay customer focused in order to compete in today's global economy. This course offers front line employees and customer service representatives the opportunity to learn how to be successful on the job. It encompasses what customer service is all about, who our customers really are, and how to communicate with customers. D........ Design a Web Page This course will unlock the potential of existing Internet resources and software that are already on your computer. No detailed knowledge of HTML (the language of the Internet) is necessary. Learn how to utilize materials accessed on the Internet, a basic word processor, and image editor to produce attention-getting Web sites. It is all there waiting for you to add your own message and creative touch. h your own personal style. Design Your Own Wedding Flowers To give your special day that even more personal touch, design your own wedding bouquet and silk arrangements. For each class, you will need: wire cutters, scissors, knife, and floral tape. You will be working on your own projects. The instructor will help you determine your supply needs for your individual project. (Class size is limited to 12 students.) Desktop Publishing Learn the "how tos" of scanning, saving, and using a digital camera. Use your photos and incorporate them into a newsletter, an invitation, a calendar, a sign, business cards, labels, postcards, and letters. Students will work with foil on documents and special types of paper and will utilize software features for dressing up documents. Students need to bring a disk of photos to class. E........ Electrical Motor Controls This class covers the various methods of controlling electric motors including relays, push button pressure, sequence, multiple start-stop, reverse, and most other motor controls. Introduction to ladder logic is also included. (Textbook: $50). Ergonomics Training This class was developed as an introduction to the ergonomics standards and is directed to top level management and safety personnel since this is where it all begins. We will interpret the ergonomics standards and look at the planning required to put the standard into effect. Establishing the standard will require planning and documentation prior to implementation. Excel I Students create, modify, print, and format worksheets; work with basic formulas and functions; use multiple worksheets; enhance worksheets; use styles and auto formats; and work with charts. Excel II Students use names, work with advanced functions, work with advanced formatting features, locate and update data, use special format and print options, protect worksheet data, manipulate the screen display, share worksheet data, and use templates and macros. Excel III This course covers Database Management and Analysis. Students create and sort databases; use database functions, filters, and queries; create and modify pivot tables; audit worksheets; and create scenarios and custom reports. Excel Macros This course introduces students to personal and workbook macros in Microsoft Excel. Students will create and run macros, use Visual Basic and work with controls, toolbars, and menus. F........ Floral Design This is a design course that will allow you to work on your own projects in colors you choose. In the first class you will learn the basic techniques of bow making. Each class night will include demonstrations of all types of floral arrangements. Each week you will bring in projects you want to complete. For each class you will need: wire cutters, scissors, knife, and floral tape. (Class size is limited to 12.) Forklift Operation Safety Training Learn the skills necessary to operate a forklift truck safely. Students who successfully complete the class will receive an operator's safety card indicating the hours of training completed. This course meets OSHA requirements. Pre-registration is required. On-site programs can be arranged for groups of twelve or more students. FrontPage This course allows students to build a Web site; work with tables, pictures, and hyperlinks; use dynamic HTML effects; and manage a FrontPage Web site. Fundamentals of Industrial Electricity I This course aids in understanding the non-mathematical approach to principles of electricity as well as electron theory, static electricity, electrons in motion and magnetism. Learn methods of generating a voltage, measuring current, and voltage resistance. Circuit components, conductors, insulators, resistors, capacitors and simple Ohm's Law calculations for DC and AC circuits will also be covered. High Pressure Boiler Operation This is a continuation of the Low Pressure Boiler Operation course for preparation of High Pressure License. HVAC/W Refrigeration I Course content includes: The study of basic mechanical refrigeration cycle and component identification; soldering and brazing techniques, system evacuation, refrigerant charging and recovery, and system start up and checkout; and basic forced air duct design and proper installation practices. (Textbook $40) HVAC/W Refrigeration II Trouble shooting residential and light commercial mechanical and electrical air conditioning systems is covered in this course as well as preventive maintenance practices and air source heat pumps. Microsoft Office 2000 will be the software used. Introduction to AutoCad 14 (Computer Aided Drawing) This course will cover various aspects of the AutoCad software. The primary goal is to acquaint the student with the command structure of the software. A background in drafting and/or CAD (previous releases of AutoCad) is a pre-requisite for this course. Introduction to Microsoft Office Learn how to prepare spreadsheets and graphs in Excel, word processing documents in Word, and simple presentations in PowerPoint. (Textbook $40) ISO-9001 2000 Auditor Training This course is a basic 10-hour program that stresses the same audit requirements as QS-9000 training, but uses the approach of the ISO-9001 standards as opposed to the AIAG manuals J........ Landscaping: Construction and Installation Course participants will learn how to install plant material and construct hardscapes such as fences, walls, patios, and decks. Landscaping Design for the Homeowner Beautify and add value to your home as you learn basic landscaping techniques. Discover varieties of plants and gather tips on selection of trees and plants as you learn how to maintain and manicure your lawn. Topics include: Design elements and principles, computer-aided design, drafting, identification and selection of plants, and care of plants (fertilizing, watering, and trimming). Layout Techniques for Carpenters This course is geared toward the second year carpentry apprenticeship or the construction worker who wishes to enhance basic skills. Low Pressure Boiler Operation This 36-hour class counts as 300 hours of practical experience towards certification in low pressure boiler operation. Machine Operations For those interested in metal working as a hobby or who are ready to improve their job status, this class offers information on safety, measuring, set up, operation and other facets of machine operations. Mosaic Bird House Learn the "direct" mosaic technique, with bits of colorful glass and grout, in this class while you transform a bird house into a stunning item for your home or garden. Students will create and edit presentations, draw and modify objects, and work with clip art and work art. Power Point II This class represents the advanced concepts of PowerPoint 2000. Students will work with slide outlines, create charts and tables, add multimedia elements, and link slides. Project This course presents the basic features of project management such as building a simple project, developing a project plan, sharing data with other applications and using Internet features. Publisher This course covers creating a letterhead, flyer, and newsletter using Publisher 2000. Also included are working with shapes, setting up a table, and creating a Web site. Q........ QS-9000 Auditor Training This program covers the basic requirements for internal auditors in the QS 9000 environment. Reasons and requirements of the in-house, review of audit procedures, exit interviews, and follow-up audits are the focus of this class. The text will be the most recent editions of AIAG manuals: Quality System Requirements-QS-9000 and Quality System Assessment-QSA. The class is structured for 16 hours if participants are new to the audit process and the QS 9000 requirements. Class time may be reduced if auditors are being retrained. Quilt Block Design Using Half Square Triangles Quilters will learn a quick and easy technique for making half square triangles (one of the most used quilting blocks) using purchased grid paper, or by drawing their own grid pattern. The first night of class will teach the technique and the second night of class will introduce designing quilting projects using these blocks. Supplies: 1/2 yard of two different cotton fabrics, 18" or longer clear plastic ruler, rotary cutter and mat, pencil, sewing machine and basic sewing supplies such as thread, pins, etc. Quilting - Beginning "Double Irish Chain" Discover the beautiful art of quilting. Approved by the Federal EPA, the test covers section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act. Students will prepare for the following certification types: Type I- Small Appliance, Type II- High Pressure Systems, Type III- Low Pressure Systems, and Universal- Types I, II, and II. Preparatory manuals are available at a cost of $15. Refrigerant Certification Testing Refrigerant certification is conducted through the ESCO Institute Program. Approved by the Federal EPA, the test covers section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act. Stained Glass Christmas Decoration Learn to incorporate brass and copper into a three dimensional art glass project that looks so professional everyone on your holiday list will want one. Using this exclusive solder molding technique you can create one in an evening. Supply fee: $25-$30. Stained Glass I Now is the time to get started in the fastest growing craft in the nation. An introduction to tools and glass in our first class will assist you in purchasing your supplies. Tools and supplies are extra. Approximate cost begins at $80. Stained Glass II In this course, you will cut pattern pieces, improve your cutting and soldering skills, and learn about different foils and patinas. Students need to bring a pattern to the first class. Make a copy of the pattern if possible. No patterns over 24" or original designs. Students will need basic stained glass experience and stained glass tools. Stained Glass Bird House Birdhouses are a popular decorating item right now, and in this new class you can learn a new method of crafting with stained glass while creating your own beautiful mosaic bluebird house. This class uses the direct method for stained glass, gluing glass directly to the surface of the project and then grouting. If you are a new stained glass student, you will need to purchase a cutter and breaker/grosier in addition to the birdhouse kit. (Cutter and grosier are available from the instructor for approximately $17. Complete birdhouse kits are available for approximately $43.) Stained Glass Garden Stakes Create a beautiful 8" butterfly or dragonfly that will sparkle among your flowers sitting on a 36" rod. Statistical Process Control This course is a statistical training program designed to give participants a basic understanding of the fundamentals of SPC. The class is designed for production workers who are involved in actual data collection and charting. Waste Reduction and Recycling for Business This course identifies the importance and practicality of reducing waste in business and industry. Detailed steps will explain how to organize and implement proven source reduction, reusing, and recycling activities. Case histories and video tape programs will show real businesses making positive influences on the environment and on profits. Welding I Students may learn or improve welding skills with this hands-on class. Course topics may include safety, welding positions, selection of electrodes, rod manipulation, welding terms, blueprint symbols, oxy-acetylene welding and cutting, GTAW-TIG welding, GMAW-MIG, and brazing in all positions, set up, operations and manipulations. (Textbook fee $40). Welding II A continuation of Welding I, this class also covers GTAW-TIG welding and brazing in all positions, setup, operations, and manipulations. Word II This course presents the intermediate features of Word 2000. Students use templates; create letters, envelopes, and labels; use styles, outlines, and headers and footers; create and use tables; format tables; use columns; and use graphic elements in documents. Word III This course presents the advanced features of Forms, Merges, and Macros. Students are introduced to forms creation and manipulation, mail merge, and macro creation features of Word 2000. Word IV This class presents the advanced features of Working with Long Documents. Students learn how to create master documents, footnotes, endnotes, bookmarks, cross-references, indexes, tables of figures, and tables of contents.
